Contest Winners

Here are the winners of the poetry contest I sponsored for National Poetry Month. The contest was for 3rd through 12th graders. The top prize was $50 and 2nd and 3rd prizes were $25 each.

First Place - TWELVE
Kristen Rieke
8th Grade
Rushing down the hallway
Trying to navigate to class
Praying hard that the bell would not ring
Hoping my three minutes will last
Trying not to shove
Wishing people would move
Dreaming of lunch
Asking politely for a way through
Finding an empty passageway
Moving fast
Dropping objects and picking them up
Seeing the classroom
Moving even faster
Touching the doorknob
Sliding into my seat
Breathing fast
Wondering, "Did I make it?"
Asking, "Did the bell ring?"
Smiling, my friend nods
Thinking, "I made it!"
Grinning while the bell chimes
Panicking is over
Being twelve is tough!

2nd Place - GUITAR
Molly Fraser
3rd Grade

A calm sound
to booming loud
A melodious instraument
You can't help
but hit the strings
and play a tune

3rd Place - THE LADYBUG CAT
Hollyann Niemiec
5th Grade
The Ladybug Cat drank cream in a mug.
More that that she loved to eat ladybugs.
With a pit, a pat, and a whack
She would eat them and that was that.
At night a strange thing would happen.
She would get lots of spots and dots.
Orange and black around her head and body.
She was rather dotty.
She was The Ladybug Cat.
And that was that!
